
I recently discovered Todd Wemmer’s encyclopedic blog sites about vernacular photography. In a time when a lot of attention is focused on so-called “high art” photography, Wemmer has been collecting, bookmarking, blogging, and linking to sites about photography in everyday use–the snapshot, the photo album, the photo booth, the disposable camera, etc. On top of that, he runs a podcast in which he interviews other people about their engagement with everyday photography, from professors researching old photographic studios to sound recordings made in photography exhibitions. In short, his sites are a treasure trove of information, articles, and original material on photography as it’s actually used and considered by normal people. If they’re a little messy, well–think of it as rummaging through an old treasure trove of photographs in the attic. You can visit them here:
